Dear Special Olympics Community,

We are excited to invite you to our second virtual Family Health Forum, sponsored by Empire Company Limited (Sobeys Inc.), focusing on Promoting Mental Wellness for Special Olympics Athletes. A Family Health Forum is a free, educational event that brings together athletes, families, caregivers, coaches, and volunteers to provide valuable health information and resources tailored to the Special Olympics community. This particular forum is designed to support mental wellness by offering practical insights into mental health literacy, recognizing when to seek help, and learning stress reduction techniques.

Forum Topic: Promoting Mental Wellness for Special Olympics Athletes: Supporting Athlete Mental Health Literacy and Stress Reduction Techniques

Join us to learn more about:

  • Recognizing and understanding mental health challenges in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Knowing when to seek help.
  • Stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness.
  • Overcoming barriers athletes face in accessing mental health support.
  • Practical tools for staying mentally strong.

Session Details: 

Both sessions will be hosted virtually on Monday, October 21, 2024. Both sessions will be presented live in both English and French.

  • Session 1: 6:30pm EST (7:30pm AST, 5:30pm CT, 4:30pm MT, 3:30pm PT) 
  • Session 2: 8:30pm EST (9:30pm AST, 7:30pm CT, 6:30pm MT, 5:30pm PT)

Speakers:

  • Dr. Carly McMorris – Clinical Developmental Psychologist and Special Olympics Strong Minds Clinical Director, specializing in the well-being of children with neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • Dr. Ami Tint – Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Professor, focusing on improving mental health supports for Autistic girls and women, and promoting equitable access to care.
  • Dr. Marina Heifetz – Registered Clinical Psychologist and Special Olympics Strong Minds Clinical Director, specializing in evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents, with a focus on mindfulness and tailored therapeutic approaches.
